The Power of More
I have always enjoyed the Olympic Motto: “Citius, Altius, Fortius.” These three Latin words translate to “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” To me, these words inspire to the ideal of doing and being “more.”
In an athlete’s quest to qualify for an Olympics or even win a Gold Medal, they are constantly preparing and training themselves so that they can be more fast, go more high, and get more strong. They are not necessarily trying to set an all-time world record. In fact, to win an Olympic Gold Medal, they only have to be more than their opponents at that specific Olympic game. So the idea of being and doing more is relative to just them and their circumstance.
With the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, I really missed seeing athletes from all around the world attempt to be more and do more. Seeing “more” in action is so powerful and very inspiring. I am, however, grateful that I have been able to visit so many of the wonderful Rotary Clubs in our great District. As I have conversed with each of you, I am inspired by the “more” each of you are doing.
Our world and our communities need “more” Rotary. They need us to keep accepting the challenge to do a little more. When each of us gives a little more and does a little more, we increase the power and ability of Rotary to make more of a difference for good throughout the world. We Grow Rotary. And Rotary Opens Opportunities for each of us to do more.
One such opportunity we have to do a little more this month is to recognize World Polio Day on Saturday, October 24th. World Polio Day exists to remind us that there is still more that we can do to make sure that someday, no child will be born in to a world with the fear of contracting paralysis from the Polio virus. There is still more that can be done in order to make sure this dream becomes a reality. Can we all ask if there is a little more we can each do as we strive to champion this most noble cause?
Please refer to the article in this Month’s District Newsletter regarding the Polio Plus Society and how to join.
The Polio Plus Society is something that our Zone and District is sponsoring to encourage giving $100 a year to Polio Plus until Polio has been eradicated. I am proud to have signed up to give a little more by pledging an extra $100 per year to Polio Plus. I know that giving more will allow us to do more and thus help more. In fact, our District has been challenged to get 50 people to sign up for the Polio Plus Society by October 24th. Giving more will allow Rotary to go faster, higher, and stronger in making a Polio-free world. I invite every Rotarian to keep doing more as we recognize World Polio Day this month.
Thank you for doing and being more. That is the Power of Rotary. We are People of Action!
