Last Year as the Pocatello Club handed out the raffle tickets for each of us to sell I decided again to do as I had done for the previous 2 years….I would simply write a check for $ 100 and purchase all ten of my own tickets.
Last Year as the Pocatello Club handed out the raffle tickets for each of us to sell I decided again to do as I had done for the previous 2 years….i would simply write a check for $ 100 and purchase all ten of my own tickets. I know many of my fellow Rotarians do this. Perhaps we do it out of laziness…..perhaps because we say we “hate to sell things”…..(although we “sell” every day in our professions….we “sell” ourselves to new customers , we “sell” our company, etc. BUT regardless of how we do it…Rotary benefits and THAT is the most important part). I am sure most of us basically look at it as a donation and feel good about it. At least that’s what I do.

I was not able to attend District Conference as I had committed to run a half marathon in Ogden on that same weekend. So on that Saturday, after finishing my race and working on getting my legs back to feeling “normal”….lol….i told my wife I was going to go back to our hotel room and take a nap. It was somewhere during that nap that my phone rang. If you have ever been in a “well deserved nap” and your phone rings, then you will understand my next sentence. I woke up in a little bit of a “fog”…. but I recognized the number as belonging to Kirsten Nickisch, our Club President. I answered my phone and Kirsten yelled “Jay…you won !”. I knew to the contrary…. I had finished 1251st out of over 2400 runners. But hey, my goal is always just “to enjoy the run AND finish the race. Then, as the “fog” was trying to clear quickly I realized Kirsten was talking about the District Raffle because her next sentence was “You won the $ 4500 of travel money….WAIT…. You sold yourself the ticket didn’t you ?”…and I answered “Yes ”. So as all of us who sell tickets for this raffle know….by selling myself the ticket my prize doubled. I was truly “a lucky duck” that day.

So as we all go out over the next several weeks to sell these tickets which provide much needed funds to help each of our clubs succeed in the many projects we do for our communities, please remember this ….”If a Rotarian in Pocatello like Jay Colonel can win….it is proof ANYONE can win”  ….and you are welcome to use that sentence anytime it will help you sell a ticket. The other thing I will tell you is …..”MY new favorite number”  is 1251…..    😊      Thanks for reading and I hope you…or someone you sell a ticket to is “ a lucky duck” this year.
