This month I would like to focus on young professionals, both members of Rotary and potential members of Rotary. First, I would like to provide some reflections on my Club visits. I have had the pleasure of meeting many young professionals that are Rotarians. My impression is that they are engaged and making a difference in their clubs and the world. Many of them are on their club’s Board helping guide the club’s activities.
It is a challenge for young professionals to be a member of Rotary. They have many things competing for their time. They are building a career and the skills that go with that career. Often times they have small children that make it difficult to attend weekly meeting or attend club projects. Finally, it can be a financial challenge to be a Rotarian. However, given all these challenges there are still young professional that have the “Rotary passion” to help those less fortunate in our communities. It is my sense that we should have the club flexibility to allow them to fulfill their passion.
There are many advantages to an international youth exchange:
- Global experience is important, so much so that some employers value it over college experience.
- Gaining confidence, independence and fluency in another language reap lifelong benefits.
- Exchange offers students opportunities to see the world and learn about other cultures in depth.
Eligible students have demonstrated leadership abilities, are flexible and willing to try new things, are open to new experiences, and are willing to serve as ambassador for our state and the US. We give a student’s country choice every consideration, but in many cases, a student may be asked to consider an exchange to another country. Interested applicants need not be children or grandchildren of Rotarians.
Rotary got its foothold in Idaho 100 years ago with the founding of the Rotary Club of Boise. Today, Rotary 5400 is 43 clubs and more than 1800 members strong.

This year, the 2016 Hailey Rotary Club "Road Apple Roulette" Fundraiser was a resounding success! For the tenth year in a row, the town of Hailey, Idaho included our major Rotary Fundraiser, "Road Apple Roulette," in their annual "4th of July-'The Sound of Freedom' Parade." The parade route is covered with a "GPS" grid. Where ever one of the many horses drops a "road apple," one of our many Rotary staff "trots", (on foot), over to immediately mark it with special marking chalk. If a horse leaves a "deposit" on your square, you are automatically eligible to win one of our fantastic prizes, donated by our enthusiastic Rotary members and community.

In 2016-2017, Rotary Foundation is celebrating 100 years of Doing Good in the World.
The Nampa Rotary Club has challenged its members to mark this historic occasion by doing 100 acts of good throughout the year and showcasing our efforts to the world. At a recent meeting, members took the pledge and posed for a photo as they made their commitment to celebrate the good in our everyday lives – from buying a cup of coffee for the person behind of you in line, to the mentoring an at-risk youth to starting a coat drive, there’s always an opportunity to do something good.

POST REGISTER: Duck race brings in an estimated $50,000
Posted: August 15, 2016, By Kevin Trevellyan
Earnings from the Idaho Falls Rotary Club’s annual Duck Race are expected to clear $50,000, said Linda Hill, race co-chairwoman.
“We’re very pleased; it was a great day. There were lots of people enjoying themselves down there all day,” she said.
Due to credit card payment, exact numbers from Saturday’s event are still several weeks away, but the club sold all 18,000 of its ducks.
The race, which has spanned 26 years, usually brings in around $50,000 per year, Hill said. This year’s revenue will be added to the more than $3 million collected in previous years.

Many clubs have had the opportunity to hear Kenton Lee of Nampa Rotary tells his story of "the Shoes That Grow". One of the challenges he's had to deal with is the logistics of getting small orders of shoes to faraway places, like Africa. One of his strategies is to find travelers, who going to these faraway places anyway, to act as "mules" and take duffle bags full of shoes - 50 pairs per bag. Well, Allison Dunn of Boise Metro was heading to South Africa on business. She'd heard Kenyon's story and immediately offered her services. So, she and her husband, earlier this month, took TWO duffle bags to South Africa. In advance, Allison had made arrangements with a Rotary Club and orphanage in Johannesburg to round up some kids and arrange for the distribution.
The Topologo Care Center in Ledig, who accepted the shoes, is currently looking after approximately 250 vulnerable children of all ages at the Ledig centre. These kids are living in the village with either a family member or 'foster' parents. The care centre provides them with a meal after school, often the only meal for the day, and some activities. There are trained counselors to help them cope with their own and their family’s HIV status. #bniidaho#actioncoach#engageandgrow#rotary#deliberatedirections
