Wheel - GoldThe Registration Deadline for the 2013 World Affairs Seminar is just weeks away.  WAS is a program of Rotary District 6270.  Each year since 1977 the World Affairs Seminar has conducted a six day Seminar to provide international relations and negotiation skills training for high school students from around the world.  In 2013 we expect students and counselors from over 25 countries including Egypt, Nepal, India, the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa and several South American countries.    The Seminar is held at Carroll University, Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Whether or not your club is able to sponsor students this year, you are encouraged to budget for the 2014 Seminar “World Health” to be held June 21, - 27, 2014, as well as “International Energy” June 20 - 26 2015.

WAS is a unique experience, exposing students to a rich mix of ideas and information.  We take great pains to represent a balance of opinions and approaches.  Since its inception over 27,000 future world leaders ages 16 to 18 have been exposed to the ideas of international thinkers at WAS.  Student delegates are also given the opportunity to participate in challenging intellectual exercises, field trips and a Capstone project.

Past graduates tell us the WAS experience is life changing.  The relationships formed during their short time at the World Affairs Seminar endure, sometimes evolving into business and political contacts over time.  As they distill information they build leadership skills, collaborate with peers to solve problems and then defend their points of view in group settings.

Our new Academic Dean David Howell, PhD, has infused our program with renewed energy.  Dr. Howell is the Chair for Servant-Leadership and Associate Professor for the General Studies department at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).  We are excited about the new ideas Dr. Howell brings to our program, and the opportunity to associate with MSOE.

Tuition is $650 (Domestic) or $550 (International) per student and includes all Seminar materials, room and food.  “Early Bird” and group discounts are also available. Typically Rotary Clubs provide scholarships, although student delegates are also sponsored by school districts and a number of generous individuals including WAS Board of Directors.  Transportation to and from the Seminar is usually paid by parents or by the students themselves.

The World Affairs Seminar is independently run and managed.  Our organization is governed by an elected Board of Directors and managed by an Executive Director, all of whom are Rotarians.  Our associations with Carroll University and the Milwaukee School of Engineering are contractual and cooperative.  We also benefit from the insights and advice of a Board of Advisors that represents an international scope and a diverse range of ideological opinions.   Additional information can be found on our website:  www.worldaffairsseminar.org  or by calling: (414) 453-4984.
